Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between coke oven gas and blast furnace gas compression duties?
Coke oven gas (COG) typically contains 55–60% H₂, 25–30% CH₄, and small amounts of CO, CO₂, and nitrogen, with significant tar and naphthalene contamination risk requiring careful inlet filtration. Blast furnace gas (BFG) is predominantly CO (20–25%), N₂ (55–60%), and CO₂ (20–22%), at low calorific value. Both require explosion-proof electrical design, gas-tight shaft seals, and corrosion-resistant materials — but the specific metallurgy and filtration design differ significantly between the two applications.
How are shaft seals designed to prevent explosive gas leakage?
Oil-film labyrinth seals with nitrogen purge are the standard approach for flammable gas service. A continuous nitrogen barrier is maintained at pressure between the process gas chamber and the atmosphere, preventing any combustible gas from reaching the motor or external environment. Gas detection sensors are interlocked with automatic shutdown. All electrical equipment within the classified zone is rated to the applicable ATEX or IEC Ex standard.
Can these compressors handle wet or tar-laden coke oven gas?
Yes. Inlet knockout drums, coalescing filters, and heated inlet piping are integral parts of the coke oven gas compressor package. Cylinder bore materials and valve components are specified to resist tar adhesion and naphthalene deposition. Heated cylinder jackets can be supplied where condensation in the cylinder bore is a risk.
What happens if there is an unplanned shutdown on a blast furnace gas compressor?
Automatic safety shutdown sequences include: isolation of suction and discharge block valves, nitrogen purge of the cylinder and piping, venting of trapped gas to a safe elevated vent point, and locking out electrical supply. These sequences are pre-programmed into the PLC with manual override for maintenance. Re-start interlocks verify safe conditions before allowing restart.
Are these compressors suitable for coalbed methane from underground mines?
Yes. Coalbed methane (CBM) compressors for underground drainage are a specific product type in this range. They are designed for methane concentrations from 30% to 100% CH₄, low inlet pressure (0.02–0.15 MPa typically), and must meet mining safety explosion-proof standards. Models are available in fixed-installation and trailer-mounted configurations for coal mine drainage stations.
Working with natural gas or LNG in the same plant? Our Natural Gas / LNG / BOG Skid-Mounted Compressors cover the full range of methane-class combustible gas compression duties.
