What is the difference between a BOG compressor and a feed-gas compressor in LNG service?
BOG (boil-off gas) compressors handle low-pressure vapour evaporating from LNG storage tanks — typically at -160 °C boil-off temperature and very low suction pressure (near atmospheric). Feed-gas compressors take pipeline-pressure natural gas and compress it to the inlet conditions of the liquefaction cold box. Both are designed for different mechanical and thermal duty cycles.
Can these compressors handle sour natural gas (H₂S content)?
Yes, for specified H₂S concentrations. Material selection — including valve trim, piston rod, and packing materials — is upgraded to NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 sour-service requirements. H₂S concentration, CO₂ content, and temperature must be specified at enquiry stage.
What is a mixed refrigerant compressor and where is it used?
In LNG liquefaction plants, the refrigeration cycle uses a mixture of nitrogen, methane, ethane, propane, and heavier hydrocarbons as refrigerant rather than a pure component. The mixed refrigerant (MR) compressor handles this blend through the warm and cold stages of the refrigeration cycle. Composition can vary during plant startup or load changes — the compressor must handle the resulting variation in molecular weight and compressibility.
Are these available as CNG station packages?
Yes. CNG compressor packages for natural gas refuelling stations are available in skid-mounted configurations with VFD or fixed-speed drives, integrated sequencers for cascade storage management, gas detection systems, and PLC-based station control panels.
What cooling options are available for remote or offshore locations?
Air-cooled, water-cooled, and air-water combination cooling are all available. For remote locations without cooling water, air-cooled packages with fan-cooled interstage and aftercoolers are standard.
